90s__ 1991__
In February, Tetsu, the bassist and leader of the group, formed L'Arc with the members Hyde (vocal), Hiro (guitar), and Pero (drums). The name comes from the French word for rainbow, or more literally, "the ark in the sky.", Tetsu had watched a movie with the same title and thought how perfect would it be for the name of his band. During that year, they had their first live at Namba Rockets and became quite prominent and popular in the indies scene.
**First demo with first members**1992
By 1992, the guitarist, Hiro, had left the group. With a live being imminent, the need for a guitarist was pressing. Tetsu then remembered his childhood friend, Ken, who at the time was still in university studying architecture, was a guitarist and figured he could be apart of the band. It took around three days for Ken to finally accept the offer to become a permanent member and he quit college around a month or two before graduation. Shortly after, "Voice" was recorded for the Omnibus Gimmick CD. A month after that, they released their first single "Flood of Tears" along with another track "Yasouka". December 30th, their drummer departed after a live. Tetsu contacted Sakura, whom of which he'd seen in a few lives, and proposed that he be their new drummer. As you can see, Tetsu was..very proactive. Always has been. None of the members were familiar with Sakura, and he was in Tokyo, while they were based in Osaka. This led to Sakura having to constantly make trips to Osaka for rehearsals and performances.

January 16, 1993, Sakura became an official member of the group. April, their very first album, DUNE, was released on the record label Danger Crue. The album skyrocketed to #1 on the Oricon Indies Chart a month later. Following the release of DUNE, they went on two different tours, Feel of Dune and Close by Dune. In September, the group moved to Tokyo. Their video "Touch of Dune" was released on October 21st.

In February, a special was released called "Nostalgie no Yokan" on Valentine's Day. It is also worth noting that Hyde was in his very first CM (it's adorable.). That year, they signed a contract with Sony's Ki/oon label and released their major debut album, Tierra. It was released the same day as their first major tour, Sense of Time. August 20th, they performed alongside Die in Cries, Buck-Tick, Soft Ballet, and Luna Sea at L.S.B. "Blurry Eyes" was released on October 21st. Their short films Siesta Film of Dreams was released in December 1st. Two PVs were released for "Nemuri ni Yosete" and "Blurry Eyes".

This year was booming for the group, having risen to fame rather expeditiously. They established their fanclub, Ciel, on February 1st. May 21, 1995, the PV for "And She Said"was released, in addition, the tour in CLUB '95 began until June 27th. On July 6th, "Vivid Colors" was released as a single, with two different music videos. Next, the legendary Heavenly 1995 began on September 8th, shortly after the album "Heavenly" was released, which was on September 1st. On October 21, 1995, their single "Natsu no Yuutsu (time to say goodbye)" was released as well. Please note that "Natsu no Yuutsu" and "Natsu no Yuutsu (time to say goodbye)" are the same song but with different pitch, lyrics, and length. One is not on Heavenly; "(time to say goodbye)" version is only a single. Finally, on December 12-13, they held their concert, The Other Side of Heavenly 1995.

The group continued to rise in fame. On April 3rd, the group began their tour Kiss me deadly Heavenly '96 Tour, promoting their most recent release, "Heavenly". The tour lasted until May 29th. July 8th, their newest single, "Kaze ni Kienaide" was released. Note: "I'm so happy" was also released in 1996, on the "Kaze ni Kienaide" single but was not put on the album later that year. On August 26th, they began touring on their BIG CITY NIGHTS ROUND AROUND '96 tour, starting at Nippon Budokan. Their single "flower" was released on October 17, and "Lies and Truth" was released on November 21st. On December 12, 1996, their last album with Sakura in the band was released, True. This was the first album of their to sell over a million copies. To promote the album, the group began touring on their Carnival of True Tour shortly after Carnival of True Eve; which was a few days prior on December 19th; starting on December 23 and ending on January 28, 1997.Note: The group were going to perform as their alter egos: DARK TETSU, HYDE DARK, Suck-D'ark-La and Kën D'Ark, ultimately switching roles under the name "D'ARK-EN-CIEL. With Tetsu as the vocals, Hyde on guitar, Ken on drums, and Sakura on bass. They performed their only song, "DARK IN MY LIFE" once at Carnival of True. This concept was later revisited in 2004 under the name P'UNK EN CIEL. The official DARK IN MY LIFE song is on the Fourth Avenue Cafe single, released in 2006, and it is 16 minutes long, most of it being silence.True on Apple Music | True on Spotify

This year turned L'Arc and their fans' world upside down. A song from True, "The Fourth Avenue Cafe" was due to be their next single, however, in February, Sakura was arrested for heroin possession. This caused quite the scandal surrounding the group and subsequently led to all of their music being pulled from shelves immediately. During the year, Hyde, Tetsu, and Ken would be featured in magazines as just a threesome. Later, the group traveled to Europe for a trip and to record their PV for their comeback song, "Niji", meaning rainbow. The song and PV were released on October 17th, 13 days after Sakura officially quit the band, which was October 4th. In December, a "copycat" band called "The Zombies" who were "singing L'Arc's songs" was formed, along with their then only just support drummer, Yukihiro, who had been drummer in the groups Zi:Kill and Die in Cries. Most people consider The Zombies tour as the tour that broke the ice between Yukihiro and their devastated fans. Their big comeback concert, 1997 Reincarnation, was held on December 23, at the Tokyo Dome. They sold out in a record breaking 4 minutes and sold out all 56,000 tickets. The next month, in January of 1998, Yukihiro was signed as the new drummer for the group, and has been the drummer ever since.L'ARC EN CIEL IN EUROPE

They went on tour again, Tour '98 HEART NI WO TSUKERO! LIGHT MY FIRE beginning on May 1st, ending on October 21, 1998 (WOW!) "Snow drop" was released on October 7th, and the iconic "forbidden lover" was released a week later on October 14th. "HONEY" was their first million seller, and was the reason the group got to be broadcasted on Kōhaku that year. Also it's worth noting that they won Best Dresser that year!

VOCALS

Born to young parents in 1969, Hyde came from in some way or another, humble beginnings. He's always been short and shy, which unfairly made him a target of bullying as a child. His parents had wished for a girl, so they would dress him in "girly" clothing, keep his hair long, and even made him wear bikinis. His father did not approve of his demure demeanor and signed him up for self defense classes...It didn't work. The young Hyde dreamed of becoming a mangaka, however he later found out that he is partially colorblind. But that has never stopped him. He's an incredible artist who draws intricately to this day. As a result, he instead went to school for graphic design. As a teen, he listened to mostly Western rock music such as Motley Crue, Kajagoogoo, etc. Depeche Mode and David Sylvian being his biggest influences. In 1989, at 20, his career began when he strolled into the indies scene. At first, he was simply a guitarist, but when he caught the eye of Tetsu, he was subsequently upgraded to vocals. Not going to waste your time talking about his career with L'Arc, however it is worth noting that 90% of their songs are written by him. Also, Since Hyde originally spoke in Kansai-ben (the Japanese equivalent to a country accent for those unfamiliar), Sakura had to teach him the standard dialect, he literally didn't know how...allegedly.Hyde is quite the odd fellow.. by odd I mean, he's mysterious. He's so kind..so...so kind. He is somebody you instantly admire. So very philosophical, even in his music. The lyrics are boundlessly deep and full of emotion to the point where a seemingly happy song actually isn't. He's very child-like, watching him evolve into the older gentleman he is today, it is shocking to realize just how silly and sometimes childishly blasé he is. It's not easy to grasp the type of person he is at a first glance. There's no way you can watch one interview, or even listen to one song and be able to fully come to an understanding of the type of person he truly is. You really have to take time to observe and fully marinate on his very innovative ways of thinking, his morals, his battle with his beliefs, because often does he contradict himself. If I have learned anything from him, it's that.. it doesn't matter how old you are, evolution never ceases. Hyde expressed that up until recently, he never felt free and felt joy while performing. Recently, that has changed and he says he feels freer than he's ever felt. I am so drawn to him because he's not close-minded.. he is endlessly changing, always thinking about how he can improve; as a person that walks about this Earth just like me and you, and as a performer. Definitely an old dog you can teach tricks to. Even if he's stubborn as a mule at times. WELL.. enough getting my own emotions involved.During L'Arc's hiatus, Hyde had written a letter to Tetsu explaining that he no longer wanted to be apart of the band. Of course, he got talked out of it. In 2001, Hyde did a residency in England to record his first solo album, later released on March 27, 2002; Roentgen, for which he got an x-ray of his head for the cover. In 2003, he starred in the action comedy film Moon Child alongside fellow musician, Gackt. After that, he starred in his last film appearance, Kagen no Tsuki. He composed the song "Glamorous Sky" for the live-action adaptation of Nana. In 2006, Hyde went on his first solo tour, U.S. tour Hyde Faith Tour 2006.In 2008, he formed VAMPS with Kaz, of Oblivion Dust.It is worth noting that Hyde, though naturally androgynous, has always felt the pressure to make sure his style in L'Arc reflects that. To this day, there is pressure for him to make a clear distinction between "hyde" (of L'Arc) and "HYDE"(the soloist). This is why in L'Arc he dresses like **this, while during his solo, he dresses like **this.I do not know why he wears the red lipstick, aight? His solo career is seemingly flourishing now, surprisingly at the ripe time of his 50s, with his recent music releases. He is tirelessly working to put out music and perform. He's a punk rocker, L'Arc's music is not exactly his authentic sound, and if he's content with his solo career and sound, then I'm happy too. If he seems interesting to you, please support Hyde by streaming his music, following him on social media, and even participating in the contests he holds on his Facebook~ lately he's been reacting on camera to fan submissions, so you might just get lucky!**Roentgen on Apple Music****HYDE on Apple Music****666 on Apple Music****FAITH on Apple Music****ANTI on Apple Music****VAMPS on Apple Music****Roentgen on Spotify****HYDE on Spotify****666 on Spotify****FAITH on Spotify****ANTI on Spotify****VAMPS on Spotify****Kagen no Tsuki****Moon Child**

Not much childhood info other than he was friends with Tetsu during childhood, he's a year older. As stated in the History page, Ken was going to become an architect and was literally inches away from his graduation date when he dropped out to become the legendary guitarist we all know him as. There's not that much info about his upbringing, but he's quite the character.Ken is like if a cartoon character jumped out of your TV still in animated form. He's a ball of energy, he's cocky, he's HILARIOUS, he is BEAUTIFUL. Like Hyde, he has this magnetic energy, and.. everyone falls in love with him right away. He's somebody you'd want to be best friends with. Not only that, but the passion that man has for his guitar is so bizarre and extraordinary..If you watch Ken when he's playing guitar, it's almost...erotic. He looks as if he is making love to the guitar and.. it sounds..magical. I have literally never heard such raw talent and passion. You combine this gorgeous being with his undeniably brilliant talent, and you have yourself a DYNAMITE musician. There's so much to love about Ken. Everyone's eyes go to him, he's always making people laugh. His dynamic with Hyde is adorable, it's very clear he has always had this enormous crush on Hyde, he's always running away from him shyly, and he gets flustered when Hyde entertains him or touches him playfully. But they truly are best friends. A dynamic duo, and a hell of a combo when it comes to making music, as Ken has composed and written a good portion of L'Arc's music. Notably "Voice". During L'Arc's hiatus, he, former member Sakura, and a model who starred in a few of L'Arc's PVs; Ein, joined together to form the group Sons of All Pussys (S.O.A.P) in 2002. Ken was the vocal..and he was so uniquely..GOOD, for lack of a better word. He had this very.. free..sort of vocal. I can't describe it, you would have to listen yourself. S.O.A.P to me, are one of the most underrated bands of all time. Each member gave songs based on their own respective themes; Ken with love, Ein with desire, and Sakura with his experiences in jail. They put out three BRILLIANT albums. Unfortunately, the group discontinued activities after 2 short years. He has his very own mascot, **CH Lion Ragbaby.**Ken also has his own solo career, though we are not sure what he does nowadays. Just an average kid with an average upbringing, Yukihiro never really thought twice about his future. He figured he's be just your ordinary Joe, graduate from college, work a normal job, live in a normal house, grow old, kick the bucket. He figured life would be better off on the straight and narrow, so he never questioned it. He however, enjoyed a broad spectrum of music, such as The Cure, Galliano, Cocteau Twins, Nine Inch Nails, and Sade. Naturally, with such talent to look up to, he began wanting to pursue music. With this, much like most artists, he felt like school was of no use to him. When he shared his ambitions with his parents, they strictly shot him down, however he continued music while still in school. Like Ken, he dropped out of college and joined a band, his was Zi:Kill. After that, he joined Die in Cries, but had some clashes with the group artistically. Some of the songs he'd penned would go on to be L'Arc songs after he joined the group. As stated on the History page, Yukihiro initially filled in for Sakura as he was strapped for time before the group would promote again. If there's anyone you will not find any information on, it's Yukihiro. I think I have only heard him say maybe.. 50 words.. He is very... very...very quiet. He keeps to himself.. he doesn't participate in MCs, in interviews he doesn't talk at all. He just simply nods or goes "Un", and sometimes not even that..Like Ken, he is somebody you would want to be friends with. He's very odd and adores things like corners.. yes, like a corner of a table, or a counter or something. He likes those. His music taste is so unparalleled. Often I think he is from another planet. The focus always seems to be on how intriguing Hyde is, but Yukihiro is bar none, the most intriguing member. Yet again, another beautiful L'Arc member. Nowadays he sports long, gorgeous hair, and his image has changed to be futuristic and more androgynous. This guy.. he is someone that at first, I wasn't so sure of, but now he's the member I adore the most, in actuality. He is the oldest member.During L'Arc's hiatus, Yukihiro formed the group acid android, for which he plays the bass and he sings. It is very experimental and much like him, odd and unique. In 2012, another side project was formed with two others from different bands called 'geek sheep sleep'. Spoiled youngest of three children, Sakura grew up in a pretty nice household where his mother spoiled him to no end to make up for his older siblings bullying him. He took piano lessons as a child, but when he got to middle school, his interest changed and he began to take a liking to rock music. Initially, he wanted to be a guitarist but found percussion to be more his forte. In high school, he became a roadie for the legendary band, DEAD END.Sakura is a bit of a tough guy to work with. At least, with L'Arc he was. Of course his devilishly debonair looks and his fierce thrashing would leave you distracted, seeing past it. Perhaps you could come to feel empathy for Sakura. You see, he didn't really want the band to become this huge commercial success. He rejected it, even in interviews, he's so frank and curt in his manner of speech. He probably didn't realize the potential of the group, or he hoped that the members would share the same feelings as him, but they didn't. On the album True, he wrote the song "good-morning Hide" with Hyde. The reason why the lyrics are bit confusing is because they are translated. They wanted the song to be in English, however, they were without staff who spoke any good English. The message that is being conveyed is that Sakura felt like an outsider. He felt like nobody understood how he felt, that things were going so fast. That he could understand their vision -- their perspective, but that it wasn't the same as his and nobody wanted to understand it either. He began doing drugs at the time to perhaps cope with the stresses of being in a group that was rapidly evolving before his eyes. This isn't to say he wasn't close with the members, he was quite literally best friends with them, having lived with both Tetsu and Hyde at one point. Ken and Hyde being the two he was closest to. In fact, when he was doing time in jail, the two advocated the most for his return, Hyde sent him letters, Ken shunned Tetsu out. They did not want the group to continue without Sakura, and always felt like it was completely selfish to move on. They even threatened leaving the group if Sakura was replaced. Sadly, Sakura did not return and went on to join ZIGZO. He later revealed in his autobiography that if he had not left the group, he would not of gotten clean.Fear not, Sakura is still in the good graces of all the members. It's said he's also very good friends with Yukihiro. The OG L'Arc line up have performed together on a few occasions. Most recently he has made an appearance at Hyde's 50th birthday, his Halloween Party, and Tetsu's 50th birthday party. Sakura, now an older gentleman, is drummer to four bands and he's a drumming instructor. If you live in Japan want wanna learn drums, he's your guy! He posts pretty often on social media. He's worth following and his merchandise is pretty cool.I have a very special place in my heart for Sakura. The way he's always stayed true to who he is.. much like Hyde, he's quite philosophical and thinks about things both rationally and uniquely. He's always been his authentic self. When something doesn't work out for him, he doesn't just endure it to make other people happy, he does what is best for him, simply because he knows that sometimes, it's okay to be selfish for the sake of your own joy and sanity. We can all learn something from him.**good-morning Hide on Apple Music**

Sakura also lent his vocals as backup on the track "I'm so happy".

BASS

The genius behind the band would be Tetsu, who now goes by his full name, Tetsuya. To be able to scout out some of the most raw talent out there and bring them all together to create something that's never been done.. well I have to give credit where it is due. He is the leader and the founder of the group, and of course, gave the name after watching a movie with the same title. Like Sakura, Tetsu is very abrupt and frank in his way of speaking. He can be overbearing and meticulous, but a leader must possess some sort of orderly conduct or everything will fall apart. Dubbed insufferable by the band at times, he mostly kept to himself as he constantly felt like he was letting them down, even when Sakura was still in the group. Still, he has managed to be a strong leader for the past 30 years. He is known to do backup vocals in the band. If you listen to "Dearest Love", you will hear a very soft, high pitched voice drawing out a note. That is a prime example, he tends to sing very high which counters with Hyde's rich, melodic vocals. As far as his bass, he is known to also counter Ken's melodies. He has an odd obsession with bananas. He is bisexual.During L'Arc's hiatus in 2001, Tetsu established his solo career, TETSU69, however, now he goes by simply TETSUYA. He prefers a more pop sound, his solo career is a bit pop sounding, a bit like idol music. If you'd like to have a listen to Tetsu's music, please click the links below.**TETSUYA on Apple Music****TETSUYA on Spotify****TETSU69 on Apple Music****TETSU69 on Spotify**
